F ood safety is one of the most important issues in terms of public health. If safe food cannot be reached, encountering food-borne diseases and allergic reactions is an inevitable result.

In the present time, every segment of society has comprehended the relationship between food & health and has been trying to be a conscious consumer. Unfortunately, In the presence of consumer sensitivity, there is a group who is trying to become mediatized, creating information pollution and claiming to be expert by exploiting this sensitivity. This situation confuses consumers and time-to-time leads them to take inconsistent decisions about food safety.

"Safe Food Safe Future Project" aims to give information about food safety to two main target groups and to raise awareness through various platforms and tools.  One of the target groups is, by law, small and medium-sized enterprises that are responsible to supply safe food. There are many food enterprises in Turkey. However, the vast majority of these enterprises are small and medium-sized enterprises. Such entities have difficulties in accessing up-to-date information because of their education level and economic reasons. Therefore, they cannot have adequate knowledge on legal responsibilities and requirements to achieve food safety.

The other target group of the project is the consumers, which means people. Consumers are the last and most important link in the food safety chain. Increasing consumer’s knowledge and raising their awareness will be the greatest step towards ensuring food safety. The main tools to be used in reaching the target groups are: face-to-face training and seminars; printed materials, such as books, brochures, banners; and interactive web portal. Consumers in face-to-face training and seminars were met through the Ankara District Municipalities. Medium and small-scale enterprises, they were reached by chambers of craftsmen and chambers of commerce. During the project, some important food safety subjects such as food hygiene, food additives, food contact substances and materials, food label were discussed.

Particularly, the web page, which everyone can reach via internet, will share the targeted information in a fast and widely spread way.

The Safe Food - Safe Future project, which is one of the EU grants, has been carried out with German Schleswig-Holstein Consumer Organization within the VI Civil Society Dialog-Thematic Area Framework of Agriculture Fishing. The aim of this 15 month project is to improve cooperation with non-governmental organizations in EU countries; to ensure the position of such organizations in EU and their point of view; and to provide the knowledge and to share experiences. Moreover, it aims to increase the ability of international projects management.
